According to Hesiod (an ancient Greek poet who lived during Homer’s time), Kythira Island is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. The island inspired French painter Jean Antoine Watteau, 19th century famous French poet Charles Baudelaire, and 20th century Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos.

It’s a beautiful place, with valleys that end at the sea, mountainsides dressed in green or rocky and barren, spring waters gurgling or cascading down the slopes, wonderful beaches, beautiful, picturesque little villages, local tasty dishes, and architecture that blends obvious Venetian influences with the style found in Crete and Mani (south Peloponnese).

Keep in mind that winter is considered the off-season in Kythira, so some shops, restaurants, and attractions may have reduced hours or be closed. However, the island still retains its charm and beauty, making it worth a visit even during this time.
